Position:  Unix System Administrator

·         Created infrastructure from the ground up for internal IT and external production environment.

·         Entirely Open source software shop:  Subversion, ldap, tomcat, java, ubuntu, FAI, python, build, debian packages, mysql 5.0, apache 2, icecast, shoutcast, darkice, nagios, cricket

·         Hardware: Cisco equipment, 6500, 2948, 2515; dell 1425sc(x86,, amd64)

·         Managing collocation of 50+ servers. 

Gotcorp – Jan 05 – Sept 05

Position:  Unix System Administrator

Montreal, QC, Canada

·         Solely responsible for supporting about 80 servers running Solaris, Windows, and Linux.  Most mission critical of the infrastructure was supporting 3 Sunfire 880s running Oracle 9.2.0.3.0.  In addition Cisco routers, switches. Array networks 1000, Sonicwall Pro 300, TZ170.

·         Added multiple Sun A5x00 disk arrays and rearranged disk layout for redundancy and space with zero downtime .  Stabilized Solaris machines running Oracle.  Oracle database ~700G and growing at 1G a week.

·         Improved monitoring systems, configured snmp on all systems and migrated from ewatcher, a software company that no longer exists to an opensource product nagios.

·         Setup new collocation for next generation product from the ground up including bgp routing, dns, backups.

Vendio – May 04 – Dec 04

Position:  Unix System Administrator

San Bruno, CA

·         Responsible for 24 hour/7 day uptime of all production servers.  Supporting 140+ servers running Linux Debian, Redhat, Suse.  Mysql, VA Linux, Apache, Perl, Postfix, SystemImager, Netsaint, Cricket, Twiki, SmartmonTools, Foundry router/switches. 3ware controllers.

·         Updated OS on core servers to modern debian sarge distribution with no downtime.  Machines were running older distributions of linux.

·         Developing automation scripts in python, perl, and shell.  Configured central log server, and scripts to parse it for daily reports.  Installed tool to read SMART information from disks.  This gave us insight before disk failure on critical machines.

HomeGain – Feb 04 – May 04

·         Internal services supporting, Samba, CVS, NIS, NFS, Bugzilla, Wiki(moinmoin), Kickstart, Jumpstart, Veritas Backup Executive.  QA Lab mimicking production Hardware includes Sun 420Rs, Sun Storagedge A1000 running Oracle.  Configuring network, VPN, Cisco 2948G, Pix., HP switches 4000m

Realnames Corporation: - Sep 99 – Dec 01

Position:  Senior Operations Engineer

Redwood City, CA

·         Responsible for 24 hour/7 day uptime of all production servers.  Supported over 100 production servers mixed NT/2000/Linux(Redhat)/Solaris split between 4 collocations worldwide:  San Jose, New York, London, Korea.

·         Services supported in production were IIS, Apache with C modules, BIND, Qmail, Veritas Backup Executive, and proprietary applications:  RAM database, web servers.

·         Supported internal servers and QA/engineering desktops.  Internal services supported CVS, NIS, NFS home directory server.

·         Hardware utilized and configured Integrix(Sun), Dell Poweredge, Cisco Local Directors 416/425 series, Cisco switches 4000 and 2900 series, Catalyst 5000, Cisco router 7200 and 3600, Compaq Proliant 1850s, DL360s, Foundry ServerIron, and Compaq StorageWorks.

Projects/Duties:

·         Setup, enhanced and maintained a SNMP collecting tool named Cricket.  Enhancement include HTML user interface upgrade, trend analysis so it allowed my team and I to witness significant changes over a period of time, and development of a weekly report functions for executives and managers to see traffic that Realnames production machines received.

·         Helped engineers develop applications version schemes that were easily maintainable and minimal effort on the Operations Team to maintain.  Inherit to the design allowed for Realnames software to be upgraded without impacting previous versions and allowed simple changes to fall back to previous versions.  I worked closely with engineering and QA to resolve issues that were witnessed in production.

·         Traveled to collocations to upgrade/add machines.  I was involved in setting up three new collocations.  Architected collocations with terminal servers to be able to go above and beyond what most pc environment are capable of, which allowed us to upgrade OS and reboot machines remotely(similar to Sun boot prom).  While out in the field I was able to maintain all collocations.

·         Responsible for the architecture, administration, capacity planning, maintenance, and weekly code pushes for Linux, Solaris and NT/2000 production systems.

·         Responsible for delivering a reliable and efficient multi-tiered data distribution system from Microsoft SQL backend databases to outward facing Redhat databases, delivering 99.99% availability and uptime required by SLAs to partners such as LookSmart, Google, Verisign and Microsoft

·         Administered global load balancing solution using BGP across multiple backbone providers.

Ventana Technology, Inc. - Jul 98 - Sep 99 – 4 Contracts with varying lengths

Internet Travel Network - Contract Length:  5 Months

·         Set up a new data center quickly and efficiently of 50+ web/database sun servers with Jumpstart and Expect.  Implemented ssh for new collocation, setup jumpstart, configure hardware and software raids.

·         Developed a system to distribute software among 50+ web servers/database servers with Perl and Rsync, added C code to rsync for new feature.  Improved network/machine monitoring by adding several shell scripts to existing “Big Brother” monitoring software.

·         Debugged Sendmail problems, added new headers based upon destination customers

FX-Pal Xerox Corp - Contract Length:  2 Months

·         Updated SunOS/Solaris with Year 2000 patches, Administrated 20 Sun boxes, Migrated NIS, DNS, Sendmail.  Configured Xerox printing.

Mylex Corp - Contract Length:  6 Months

·         Sole Unix administrator, Supported engineering department, consisting of 25 Ultra-2 workstations

·         Restructured file system layout on live Auspex without affecting long running processes of the engineering users.

·         Setup Legato, configured UPS software, Setup CDR burner to archive Cad projects, Compiled and debugged open source software.

Pericom Semiconductor Corp - Contract Length:  3 Months

·         Sole Unix administrator, Supported 20 engineers and company needed 24/7 uptime of their HPUX Oracle database system for OneWorld (CRM application)

·         Developed numerous perl/sh scripts for monitoring file systems, sendmail, and verification of OneWorld to be notified via pager/email.

·         Identified appropriate purchase of workstations and evaluated them.

·         Supported cad software, license servers, administrated legato backups, upgraded sendmail, and patches to all engineering machines.

Sun MicrosystemsJul 97 – Jul 98

Organization:  Enterprise Network Service - JavaSoft Division

Position:  Unix System Administrator

Cupertino, CA

·         Providing support for large scale Sun Solaris and Windows 95/NT environment consisting of over 1500 nodes.  Responsible for 24 hour/7 day uptime of infrastructure servers.  Served as escalation point for Solaris and PC problems.

·         Maintain NIS server and slaves, installation of user's sun workstation, assist users, integrated PCs and Solaris with one home directory.

Projects/Duties:

·         PC infrastructure - developed autoinstall method of installing dual boot 95, and NT with a single disk.  Developed a method to allow software packages to be installed dynamically as needed.  These packages are self-contained entities that reside on a NFS server.  Package installation script is entirely in Win32 Perl.  The site was Unix environment only previous to this project.

·         Maintain home servers - containing over 200 users each, upgraded OS from 2.5.1 to 2.6, install and maintain hardware, maintain ODS and repair HD as needed.  Tune machine for optimal performance.  Repair and maintain CDE calendars.  Repair tooltalk databases.

·         In 2002 spent about a year traveling and learning about each countries’ cultures in the following locations:  Western United States, Quebec Canada, Australia, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam.

·         Enjoy automotive mechanics and performance modifications.  In 2001 I had a personal project of rebuilding a EJ22T motor (Subaru Legacy Turbo) and changing transmission from automatic to manual.
